A very serious game

This installation was designed for an amazing timber library placed in a private family house in Madrid. The challenge was to get the family´s children into the room. They didn´t want to use it, because they found it too serious and imposing. The briefing was clear; total respect for the original architecture and decoration. And one more thing, don´t interfere with the adult´s regular use of the library.

With such a strict introduction, we decided to make them hover. We extended a 21 sqm. white net, crossing half of the space. The net is tied to the gangway´s railing of the upper level and the staircase mast. No screw, bolt or tensor was used for the installation, just rope, easy to uninstall. That was another briefing term. Atmosphere gravity balances the jumping and twisting impulse during the reading session. As a curiosity tip; some adults in the house have already changed the armchair for the reading net.

At PlayOffice we spend a lot of time watching kids play, behave and use spaces or stuff. The way kids act is never random, it’s caused by what they see from their high and what they do or don’t understand out of reality. So we asked ourselves what do kids think out of reading before they discover books are actually fun? How do they perceive the act of reading by watching their parents do it? And the answer was that they felt: “This is not for me” because:

  • You have to be sitting quietly.
  • You are not allowed to talk while reading.
  • You are alone, it’s an individual task.

So when we started to work on this project we challenged ourselves to finish with this three kids threats. The result is the reading net where they can read anyway they want other than sitting, they can play, move, talk, exchange, and they can share the reading by doing it on groups or with their parents.
